This year\u2019s theme is \u201cpeace, love, and school lunch,\u201d a fun 70\u2019s theme that will make your school cafeteria a little groovier this week. <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">School Nutrition Association<\/span><\/strong><\/a> recommends getting involved by\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff9902; background-color: #ffffff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #ff9902; background-color: #ffffff;\">Decking out your cafeteria with NSLW posters and other artwork portraying nutritious lunch foods. This is a great opportunity to make use of the annual theme in the way you illustrate and depict your lunchtime favorites. If your school is open to it, you can have students create a mural or permanent artwork for year-round display.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ff9902; background-color: #ffffff;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff9902;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #ff9902;\">Getting in touch with local personalities like business owners, elected officials, athletes, news anchors, musicians, or someone else your students will recognize, and invite them to stop by your cafeteria at lunchtime to eat with the students. If you can\u2019t find a local celebrity, you can always have the school mascot or ask a volunteer to dress up as a movie or TV character.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ff9902;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff9902;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #ff9902;\">Inviting teachers, administrators or even your school principal to stand in as guest servers for lunch one day.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ff9902;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff9902;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #ff9902;\">Offering a tasting of new menu items and talk to students about the nutritious benefits they get from certain foods. Tell them they get vitamins and minerals from all the colorful fruits and vegetables or explain to them the way whole-grains provide carbs for sustained energy during recess or sports practice.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The National School Lunch Program was created in 1962 under the <strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act<\/span><\/strong> to bring awareness to the importance of nutrition in schools, as proper nutrition is essential to allowing schoolchildren to thrive inside and outside of the classroom. <span style=\"color: #ff9902; background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: normal;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/nslp\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #ff9902; background-color: #ffffff;\">NSLP is a federally assisted meal program administered through FNS that provides schoolchildren with low-cost or free lunches that are nutritionally balanced.<\/a> &nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolnutrition.org\/about-school-meals\/national-school-lunch-week\/about-national-school-lunch-week\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">NSLP services nearly 30 million children every single school day.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/frac.org\/programs\/national-school-lunch-program\/national-school-lunch-week#:~:text=National%20School%20Lunch%20Week%20(NS,nutritious%20meal%20each%20school%20day.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">The Federal Research and Action Center (FRAC) <\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">wants<\/span> <span style=\"color: #57575b;\">you to join them in the following activities to celebrate the week\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 0.5in; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #002776;\">1.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frac.org\/programs\/national-school-lunch-program\/national-school-lunch-week#:~:text=National%20School%20Lunch%20Week%20(NS,nutritious%20meal%20each%20school%20day.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #002776;\">Monday, October 10<sup>th<\/sup>: Shout-out a School Lunch Champion<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/frac.org\/programs\/national-school-lunch-program\/national-school-lunch-week#:~:text=National%20School%20Lunch%20Week%20(NS,nutritious%20meal%20each%20school%20day.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">Is there a school nutrition director in your community making a difference?&nbsp;Celebrate these&nbsp;champions by tagging them&nbsp;on Twitter&nbsp;and sharing how they go above and beyond to increase the reach of school lunch.
