COVID-19 has impacted nearly every facet of our lives worldwide, but it has had a particularly strong impact on food security. World hunger and poverty has already been a major issue across the globe, and COVID-19 has only made things worse. According to the World Food Program (WFP) the number of severely food-insecure people has doubled since the pandemic from<span style=\"color: #fa8d29;\"><a style=\"color: #fa8d29;\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000138231\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 136 million<\/a><\/span> people to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000138231\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">276 million<\/span><\/strong><\/a> people and is estimated to rise to <strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">323 million<\/span><\/strong> people by the end of 2022. Here are the main factors that have led us to the verge of a hunger catastrophe&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><span style=\"color: #022169; font-family: Montserrat, sans-serif; font-size: 30px; font-weight: bold; background-color: transparent;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\">Prior to COVID, approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionj.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12937-021-00732-2#Sec7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">11% of households were food insecure, a number that is now approximately 15%<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">The pandemic has also caused major issues in the food supply chain that have led to substantial price increases, supply shortages, and transportation issues. These continuing COVID-19 challenges and supply shortages could send <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usglc.org\/coronavirus\/global-hunger\/#:~:text=Supply%20chain%20disruptions%20due%20to,to%20bed%20hungry%20every%20night.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">9.3 to 13.6 million children into acute malnutrition<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\"> this year.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>CLIMATE SHOCK<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\">Climate shock occurs when an event or natural disaster disrupts the sustainability of a community. Changes in climate impact farming and agriculture which in turn disrupts the food supply chain. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0192928#:~:text=Households%20that%20reported%20experiencing%20a,lower%20odds%20of%20food%20insecurity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">A study from PLOS<\/span><\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #57575b;\">noted that <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">71%<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #57575b;\"> of households reported experiencing climate shock and that these households were <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">1.73 times more likely to be food insecure<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>CONFLICT<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\">Conflict is the largest contributing factor, with <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000138231\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">60% of hungry people in the world living in conflict-afflicted areas.<\/span><\/strong><\/a> One of the more recent conflicts being Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, who is a major wheat supplier that millions depend on. As of May 2022, <strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">the World Food Program estimates that 1 in 3 households across the Ukraine are now food insecure.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>COST OF FOOD + FUEL<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\">An unprecedented jump in food prices of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/food-prices-surge-new-record-high-march-un-agency-says-2022-04-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">13%<\/span><\/strong><\/a> occurred in March of 2022. The price of wheat and oil has <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/somalia\/ukraine-conflict-soaring-food-and-fuel-prices-threaten-wellbeing-millions-east#:~:text=Somalia%20is%20currently%20in%20the,comes%20from%20Russia%20and%20Ukraine.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">increased as much as 300%<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\"> in areas like Africa and the Middle East, <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #57575b;\">driven by the fact that Russia and Ukraine account for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/UKRAINE-CRISIS\/FOOD\/zjvqkgomjvx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">24% of global wheat exports<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/UKRAINE-CRISIS\/FOOD\/zjvqkgomjvx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">Other notable increases include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0.7in;\"><span style=\"color: #ee8723;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 541px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\" src=\"https:\/\/goebt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Food-Insecurity-Graphic-1.png\" alt=\"Food Insecurity Graphic-1\" width=\"541\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the USDA and many other organizations are working hard to combat food insecurity.
